California Current Integrated Ecosystem Assessment

California Current Ecosystem Component: Local Social Systems

Overview

Social systems vary geographically and across different social groups. State and local laws and policies, regional economies, local institutions and social networks, local social hierarchies, diverse cultural values and norms, the built environment, and other particularities affect human wellbeing directly or indirectly, and constrain or enable human activities related to the marine environment.

Particular governmental, economic, social, and cultural conditions such as state fishing regulations, the affordability of fishing, an accessible launch site, and community-based cultural practices, for example, mediate access to marine resources for human well-being.
