Food insecurity stemming from economic losses and from loss of subsistence harvest activities:
Food bank usage soared in some fishing communities during the massive 2015 HAB event that resulted in lengthy delays to the opening of crab fisheries (Magee, 2017). Food insecurity among commercial fishers may be exacerbated by being unable to keep a portion of their catch for household use during fisheries closures. For members of the Quinault Indian Nation, razor clams are a staple food throughout the year and is an important source of income that many families depend on. For example, community “back to school” clam digs subsidize the cost of new school clothes for children to ease the financial burden for families on a fixed income (Crosman et al., 2019).
