Ecosystem Status Report
2015 Assessment of Alaskan Arctic
In 2012, NOAA IEA did a preliminary assessment of the Alaskan Arctic ecosystem and then another assessment in 2015. The intent of assessing the Alaska Arctic is to provide information placed within a broad ecosystem context to the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council that would be useful when making decisions on the authorization and management of new fisheries in the Alaska Arctic. Currently there is a moratorium on commercial fishing in the Arctic until there is a better understanding of the ecosystem. The council currently has an Arctic Fisheries Management Plan where this information can be incorporated.
From now on the Northern Bering Sea information will be included with the Eastern Bering Sea information when presented to the council.
